Beaver Creek, Colorado

The first World Cup of the season took place last week in Beaver Creek. It’s safe to say the season is officially underway. With the cancellation of the first race in Levi, Finland a month ago, we had another few weeks of preparation leading up to last week. Some would argue more is always better, but after such a pause between races ( the last World Cup being last March) its tough to remember what’s its like to push out of a start gate with the World watching.

I can safely say it all comes back very quickly, as the nerves set in at the top of a course. The first competition is always a bit different. Wondering whether or not your hard work in the gym was enough, if your 6 weeks of technical training on snow has paid off, if your equipment is dialed in to your liking. Those added distractions make the first race that much more challenging. For some that may be offset by the excitement of finally racing. For others, inevitably another distraction. I suppose that’s where experience, or ignorance come into play.

For me, the biggest distraction was not focusing on the race itself. I know this sounds counterintuitive, after all I am racing. To clarify, I wanted to stray from the outcome orientated process of thinking, having expectations, and rather use this opportunity to better my skiing. It’s a long season and a long road to being a great skier, and I think it’s important to always have that goal in mind. Im obviously competing and trying to go as fast as possible, but having purpose and meaning in my skiing, and a bigger goal in mind is important, something I have lacked in previous years. I’m not where I want to be, but I know if I focus on the right things I will get there. It’s close, and after all, skiing is a sport of hundredths of seconds.

I had a great top section, and though I made a few mistakes in the middle, until the last section of the course I was definitely in the race. I pushed the line a bit and failed to adjust to some terrain near the bottom, and made a costly mistake. In a sport of hundredths, such mistakes can often cost you the day. In my case this proved true.

I skied well in Beaver Creek, and I can say that though I am not happy with the end result, I was happy with my approach. It is something to build on, and I’m confident I will get where I want to be. Were off to Italy in the morning for a Europa cup, and will continue with our 2nd World Cup of the season next weekend in Alta Badia, Italy.

Dalbello

Earlier this summer I was testing a new boot company called Dalbello. They have actually been around for years, but this season is the first they have made a race boot and entered the World Cup pool. As the boot industry has remained pretty much the same for the past 3 decades, and as almost every boot out there use the same mold, I was very interested in trying something new. Don’t get me wrong, the Dalbello boot isn’t the next character in Transformers, it very much resembles every other ski boot out there, however there are a few subtle changes that I believe can be very beneficial in the way a boot works. That paired with the fact that I am one of the only World Cup athletes using the boot, and that support in building a successful race boot would be limitless, I was eager to switch companies and take on the new challenge.

The thing is, building a race boot isn’t so simple. So much time and money goes into research and development, different molds (a new mold can cost $100k) and different plastics. It’s a bit like starting a new winery. You know the wine making process, you know you need grapes and bottles. But it takes years to find that “je ne sais quoi”, those secret ingredients that distinguish drinking wine from mosquito repellant. That’s where we are with the boots. Given the right restaurant (slope) and paired with the right food (snow condition) they are great. The boots however lack consistency in all conditions and require you to be in the perfect place at all times. As skiing is an outdoor sport and has a range of variables, a big part of ski equipment is its ability to perform in anything. The easier the equipment is to ski, the better you can be.

I have no doubt we will get there, but it is indeed a process, one that has served higher obstacles than I imagined and has taken longer than I hoped. The resiliency that the staff at Dalbello has shown is comforting, and together we will get where we need to be. I do feel bad riffling through equipment and giving the yay or nay, but its part of the process. I’m grateful to have my boot serviceman Fabian around at all times to make the necessary changes on the spot. I’d hate to see what the boot would look like if I were on my own. Probably like the first time I tried painting on canvas…

Ready for work

I am currently in Saas Fee, Switzerland for our fall training camp. Our job is unique in that we need to chase winter, to the southern hemisphere in summers or this time of year to glaciers in Europe. With that said, the last time I was here was 10 years ago. Ski camps are different at a young age when you are missing school, with your friends, or chasing girls. Skiing has slowly but surely become a profession. Thats not to say that my teammates aren’t friends or that I still don’t chase girls (I can’t however run as fast). These training camps over the years have turned into a job, more focus on skiing, keeping my body in order; it is after all my livelihood. Being away from home 8 months of the year as a teenager would have been pretty stellar, and not that it isn’t now, but I’ve learned to really value my time at home with friends and family. When I fly abroad, and the customs officers from country to country ask if I’m “here for work”, I reply yes. As I write this and drink my morning coffee, I realize I am here for just that. Work. Yet as I look outside, I am also reminded how great my “job” is. We’re here for 2 weeks before heading to Scandinavia for our first World Cup of the season. Time to do some work.

Australia

A few years back, after suffering a knee injury that saw me miss a season, I decided to make an effort to enjoy traveling and being on the road.  It’s amazing what we can take for granted.  Skiing takes me all over the world, but I have made an effort to turn such ski trips into ensuing trips.  These have taken me to Spain, Fiji, Paris, and most recently Australia. New Zealand Camp

Every year come July, after months of training in the gym, we gear up and head south for our on snow training.  Chasing winter has brought me close to the south pole in Ushuai, Argentina, all over Chile, and in most recent years to the beautiful South Island of New Zealand. After 3 months of 4-5 hours a day in the gym, it’s always exciting to get back on snow.  It’s a bit like riding a bike as it comes back quickly, but that’s not to say its a bit odd suiting up for the first time and doing those first few turns.  Continue reading

Ski Testing

I’m currently in Molltal, Austria, testing some new product for next year. With the varying snow conditions last year, and a long frustrating season, I thought it was time to see what other options there were in terms of equipment. It is so important with the new technology in skis and boots to find a set up that suits your style of skiing and allows you the confidence to really push the limit. Continue reading

Summer Training

After suffering an MCL tear at the end of a long season, I spent a month in physio rehabbing what was my 4th ligament tear to my left knee. Its never a good time to be injured, with that said the end of the season is best with ample time to recover. Though “rehabbing”, I did manage a week of surf in Mexico before we were back in the gym full time. Continue reading
